Germany and asylum-seekers – level 3

02-09-2024 07:00

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz paid his respects to the victims of a mass stabbing in the city of Solingen, which he called an act of terrorism.

He promised to continue fighting against extremism, saying that attacks like this threaten the way people live and should never be tolerated. Police have arrested a 26-year-old Syrian man who they believe is responsible for the attack. The Islamic State terror group has claimed responsibility. The suspect had previously applied for asylum in Germany; however, his application was rejected, and he was supposed to be deported back to Bulgaria, where he first entered the European Union.

The incident has sparked protests from far-right groups and has led to calls for stricter asylum and deportation policies in Germany. Scholz has vowed to improve deportation processes and review weapons laws. The incident is expected to influence upcoming state elections, where anti-immigration parties will likely gain support.

Difficult words: extremism (having extreme political or religious views), vow (to promise), deportation (forcing someone to leave a country, especially someone who has no legal right to be there).
