Germany’s economy in trouble – level 2

21-02-2025 07:00

Germany’s economy is having problems. One big reason is that Russia stopped sending gas, which makes energy very expensive. Factories now pay much more to produce goods. Green energy is not growing fast enough to help.

China is also a problem. Before, China bought many German products, but now it makes the same things and sells them for less money. This means that German companies are losing business.

Germany also didn’t spend enough on roads, trains, and the internet. Now these things need fixing, but the government has little money to help. There are not enough skilled workers. Many companies can’t find people with the right training, and fewer students want to study science or technology.

Finally, Germany has too many rules which slow things down. Businesses have to do a lot of paperwork, which makes everything take longer.

Difficult words: goods (things which companies or shops sell), skilled (having special knowledge or training), paperwork (documents and forms which people and companies need for official work).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How does the stoppage of gas shipments contribute to higher production costs, and what additional challenges—such as competition from Chinese products, underinvestment in infrastructure, workforce shortages, and extensive paperwork requirements—further complicate business operations in Germany?
