Goats can eat your Christmas tree – level 2

02-01-2025 07:00

Instead of throwing your Christmas tree in the trash, why not give it to goats?

Urban Growers Collective, a nonprofit in Chicago, is collecting old pine trees to feed their 15 Nigerian pygmy goats. The trees provide vitamins A and C and help keep the goats healthy.

Residents can drop off undecorated trees at South Chicago Farm until January 11. Goats enjoy eating the bark, branches, and needles. But make sure the trees are free of decorations, hooks, and fire-retardant sprays, which can harm the animals.

If donating to goats is not possible, Chicago’s recycling program runs from January 11–25. They will turn trees into mulch for parks and gardens. Broken holiday lights can also be recycled at special locations through January 31.

Difficult words: nonprofit (an organization which makes money to help people, not for business), undecorated (without decorations or ornaments), fire-retardant spray (a spray which reduces fire), mulch (pieces of wood which we use in gardening).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What precautions should be taken before donating your old Christmas tree to the Urban Growers Collective in Chicago for their goats?
