Good news – level 3

25-10-2024 15:00

This week’s positive stories show that many exciting innovations are happening globally.

China has built the largest wind turbine, generating 20 megawatts of power, which will help reduce carbon emissions. Another inspiring story comes from a teenager, Heman Bekele, who invented a bar of soap that can prevent skin cancer. It contains ingredients that stick to the skin after washing, making treatment more accessible in developing countries. Denmark also introduced a carbon tax on livestock farms to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Farmers will have to pay per tonne of methane emitted, but they will receive support to become more eco-friendly.

In addition, four students developed a cheap device that detects wildfires using heat-sensitive technology, which can help stop them earlier. The Hague became the first city to ban fossil fuel-related advertisements, making it illegal to promote fossil fuels. Lastly, researchers are trying to create a super-coral to help marine ecosystems survive warming seas.

Difficult words: innovation (new idea or product), ecosystem (a community of organisms and its environment).
