Gotthard tunnel reopens – level 1

The Gotthard Base Tunnel is the longest railway tunnel in the world. It opens again on Monday after over a year.
The tunnel closes last year in August. A freight train crashes there when its wheel breaks. This causes a lot of damage. It is hard to repair the tunnel. Workers must be careful. It is very hot inside. Repairing the tunnel costs 159 million euros. It is much more than experts think in the beginning.
When the tunnel closes it is difficult for freight trains. Companies in Italy have problems. This problem gets worse because another important railway between Italy and France closes at the same time.
Difficult words: railway (the metal tracks on which trains run), freight train (a train which carries things rather than people), cause (to make something happen).
