Harrison Ford speaks to students – level 3
18-05-2026 07:00
Harrison Ford, the legendary actor known for roles like Han Solo and Indiana Jones, was honored with a doctorate from Arizona State University. While he is famous for cinema, this award recognizes his most important work beyond the screen.
For over 30 years, Ford has been a leader at Conservation International, and he has been fighting to protect ecosystems that humans need to survive. He is also a skilled pilot who has flown humanitarian missions, including delivering medical teams and supplies to remote areas of Haiti after a devastating earthquake.
In his speech to the graduates, Ford shared his personal journey. He admitted that in college, he didn’t make good choices until he discovered his love for acting, which gave him a sense of community. However, he explained that passion brings joy, but purpose brings meaning. For him, purpose came from realizing that nature doesn’t need people, but people need nature. He urged the new graduates to use their unique talents to lead, protect the planet, and stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves.
Difficult words: doctorate (the highest level of education you can get from a university), ecosystem (all the living things in one area), devastating (causing a lot of damage or destruction).
