Highway in Peru – level 3
02-09-2016 07:00
Over 100 families clashed with police when the police evicted them from their homes in Peru.
People moved them away from a land intended for the expansion of a highway. This happened in the northwest of the country.
Some 59 volunteers from peace missions, as well as 180 policemen arrived at the scene. Children could be seen running after their relatives. Family members fought against officials in order to stay in their homes.
Volunteers carried belongings from the homes before the heavy machinery was brought in to destroy the houses.
Land conflicts and forced move-outs are a big problem in Peru and are now becoming a part of life in other parts of Latin America too.
Difficult words: clash (to fight), evict (to make somebody leave their home), intended (planned).
