How to cool cities – level 3

20-07-2022 07:00

In the 1960s, an average of two heatwaves happen a year in the US. In the 2010s, the number increased to six as heatwaves became more frequent in the US and across the world.

In a rather new concept, people want to design cities to cool them against the heat. Ventilation corridors increase the wind speed in an area to bring the temperature down a few degrees. Architects also arrange buildings in certain patterns, and they add shade structures throughout communities.

Greenery is another good method to cool cities. In 1967, Singapore started its garden city with many planted trees and added new parks. The city is creating sky gardens and adding greenery on tall buildings.

In the US, some cities offer incentives to install green roofs, and the department of energy plans to start a grant program to build green roofs on public schools.

Lighter color paint on roofs and roads lighter colors is another option, since they reflect more solar energy.

Difficult words: concept (a plan or idea), ventilation corridor (a long space to allow fresh air into a place), incentive (a motivation to encourage someone to do something).
