Hungary protest – level 2

10-10-2024 07:00

In Budapest, many people protested outside the office of Hungary’s public media, MTVA. They want more freedom for the press.

Péter Magyar, the leader of the TISZA party, organized the protest. He said the public media only shows what the government wants and tells lies. Magyar’s party is the main opposition to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and it got almost 30% of the vote in the recent EU elections.

Reporters Without Borders said the government controls 80% of Hungary’s media. Protesters like Balázs Tömpe and Ágnes Gera believe the media is unfair and doesn’t show all sides. Magyar asked the director of public media to quit and called for another protest on October 23.

Difficult words: media (the internet, magazines, TV, and so on), opposition (a group against those in power), quit (to leave a position, or to stop doing something).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What percentage of Hungary's media does the government reportedly control, according to Reporters Without Borders?
