Iceland and women – level 3
13-12-2024 07:00
Iceland is often praised for gender equality, ranking highly in global gender parity.
Nearly 90% of Icelandic women work, supported by generous parental leave and teaching methods to challenge stereotypes. For instance, some schools use innovative programs like separating boys and girls to help each develop traits commonly linked with the other gender. Iceland was also the first to mandate equal pay and continues improving women’s lives with policies like gender bonds for housing. However, it faces significant issues, such as high levels of gender-based violence, with 40% of women reporting physical or sexual abuse. Activists argue the justice system falls short, as most cases of sexual violence don’t reach court.
Despite its achievements, Iceland’s struggles with domestic violence and systemic issues show that true equality requires continuous effort. Iceland’s role as a global leader may inspire others, but its journey toward full gender equality is far from over.
Difficult words: parity (equality in status or position), mandate (to officially require something), gender bond (social bonds that support women empowerment and gender equality), fall short (to fail to meet an expectation or standard).
