Illegal ivory in Vietnam – level 2
27-03-2023 07:00
On Monday, Vietnamese authorities seized seven tons of ivory in Haiphong City. Officials said that the ivory came from Angola and it transited via Singapore.
Customs officers found the ivory in a container which officially had peanuts in it. Last month, authorities found 600 kilograms of African ivory in the city’s port. In the same month, a court in Vietnam sent a man to prison for 13 years, because he smuggled almost 10 tons of endangered animal parts from Africa. These parts included ivory and rhino horns.
It is illegal in Vietnam to trade ivory, but smuggling animal products is very common.
Difficult words: seize (to take hold of something by force), ivory (the hard white substance which forms the tusks of animals such as elephants), smuggle (to move things illegally into or out of a country), endangered animal (a species that will probably not exist soon).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What type of penalty is given in Vietnam to those convicted of smuggling animal products?
