Indonesia’s new capital – level 2

22-08-2024 07:00

Indonesia celebrated its 79th Independence Day in Nusantara, the country’s future capital.

This new city is a big project by President Joko Widodo, but there are many delays and higher costs than expected. Some government buildings are still not ready, and there were not enough hotels for all the guests, so fewer people came to the celebrations.

The project should cost 3 billion dollars, but so far, there are no foreign investors. The government says that 88% of the first phase is complete, but bad weather slows down work. President-elect Prabowo Subianto says he will keep working on Nusantara, but it is not clear if it will be a main focus for him.

Difficult words: delay (a thing which makes something happen slowly), investor (a person or company who puts money into a project to make money from it), president-elect (a person who is an elected president but is not doing the job yet).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What challenges has the Nusantara project faced in terms of costs and readiness of facilities for the Independence Day celebrations?
