Iraq’s transit project – level 3

31-05-2023 07:00

Iraq has launched a 17-billion-dollar project called the Development Road, which aims to connect the Grand Faw Port in the country’s oil-rich south to Turkey.

The project intends to transform Iraq into a transit hub, rivaling the Suez Canal by shortening travel time between Asia and Europe. The road and rail network would facilitate the movement of goods and passengers, including high-speed trains. The Grand Faw Port, already halfway to completion, would play a crucial role in this transportation network.

The project was announced at a conference to attract Arab interest and potential regional investment. Despite past promises of development in Iraq, infrastructure remains in poor condition. However, officials are hopeful that the relative stability in recent times can be sustained for the project’s successful implementation.

Difficult words: hub (the center of an activity), facilitate (to make an action or process easier), sustain (to support something or keep it going).
