New rules for sex workers in Belgium – level 2

25-06-2024 15:00

Belgium now allows sex workers to have job contracts with approved employers. It means they will have the same rights as other workers.

The law started in May 2024, and it should stop abuse and give clear rules for these workers. Before the new law, sex workers got money in cash or as waitresses, which was risky. Employers need a clean criminal record and must respect workers’ rights, for example, workers can say no to clients. Some people think the law is bad because it treats women as products and does not help migrant sex workers. Many sex workers believe this change is good and could work. Experts say that it will take years to see how the new law affects sex workers and illegal businesses.

Difficult words: approved (officially accepted), abuse (to use in a wrong way), criminal record (an official list of a person’s crimes).
