Nigeria’s scorpion farms – level 1
24-03-2025 07:00
In Nigeria, some farms collect scorpion venom to sell.
Muhammad Usman has a farm with many scorpions. He has more than 10,000 animals. He carefully takes their venom. He keeps it in a fridge. People use venom medicine and beauty products. It is very expensive. One gallon costs 10 million dollars! But getting venom is hard. You need many scorpions to make even a little venom.
A scientist says that new technology can now make venom in a lab. This may make scorpion venom cheaper in the future. But Usman still collects venom. He would like to sell it for a lot of money.
Difficult words: venom (poison from animals), fridge (a cold place where you keep things like food), lab (a place where scientists work).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What factors contribute to the high cost of scorpion venom, and how does the new lab technology challenge Usman’s method of collecting it?
