Olympic boxing and DNA tests – level 1

06-08-2024 07:00

Angela Carini is a boxer from Italy. She has an Olympic match with Imane Khelif from Algeria. Carini leaves the match after 46 seconds. It is dangerous for her to fight with Khelif.

Imane Khelif can box at the Paris Olympics. But last year, she does not pass gender tests. Tests show she has XY chromosomes. Men have XY chromosomes. Women have XX chromosomes. This means that Khelif is born as a man. But she can still compete because her passport says she is a woman.

Khelif starts boxing in 2018. She fights in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. She gets to the quarter-finals. Many people think this is not fair. They believe that she is stronger than other women. Khelif wins another match against Anna Luca Hamori from Hungary in the 66 kg quarter-finals. It is sure that she will get an Olympic medal.

Difficult words: gender test (a test which says if a person is a woman or man), chromosome (a small part in the body which has genetic information), compete (to try to be better than someone else).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What do many people believe about Imane Khelif's strength compared to other women in boxing?
