Olympic boxing and DNA tests – level 3

06-08-2024 07:00

Angela Carini abandoned her Olympic boxing match against Imane Khelif within 46 seconds, stating she had to preserve her life.

Khelif, from Algeria, has been allowed to compete in the women’s boxing in Paris despite failing gender eligibility tests last year. DNA tests showed she has XY chromosomes, identifying her as biologically male. However, the IOC permits her to compete as a female since her passport states she is female. Khelif is a UNICEF ambassador, and she began boxing in 2018. She competed in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics where she was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Many current and former female boxing champions have criticized this decision, arguing it is unfair and compromises the integrity of women’s sports.

Despite the controversy, Khelif fought Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori in the 66 kg quarter-finals on Saturday. A win guaranteed her an Olympic medal. The IOC spokesperson emphasized balancing inclusivity, fairness, and safety in sports.

Difficult words: eligibility (meeting the necessary conditions), controversy (public disagreement or argument about something), inclusivity (policy of including all types of people).
