People in France protest against new PM – level 3

12-09-2024 07:00

Thousands of leftwing protesters marched in France after Emmanuel Macron appointed conservative Michel Barnier as prime minister.

Demonstrators, led by France Unbowed (LFI), accused Macron of undermining democracy, saying his decision ignored the July election results. France’s parliament is split between three main groups: the leftwing New Popular Front (NFP), Macron’s centrist bloc, and the far-right National Rally (RN). Barnier, from the center-right, faces opposition from leftwing parties, which had proposed their candidate.

Barnier has said he may include representatives from the left in his government. The protests signal growing tensions in the country, with many accusing Macron of relying on the far-right for support.

Difficult words: undermine (to weaken), signal (to show).
