Peter Higgs dies – level 2
15-04-2024 07:00
Peter Higgs is a famous physicist who won the Nobel Prize. Last week, he died at the age of 94.
People know Higgs for his theory which suggests the existence of the Higgs boson, often called the ‘God particle’. According to Higgs this particle gives mass to other particles and plays an important role in creating the universe. Higgs developed this theory in the 1960s, and decades later, scientists at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland proved it.
Although people normally used the term ‘God particle’, Higgs was a modest person and he focused on science. Finding the Higgs boson was a big discovery which helped scientists understand particles and forces in the universe.
Difficult words: theory (ideas which explain something), mass (many particles together which form one body), prove (to show that something is true).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What impact did Higgs' theory and the discovery of the Higgs boson have on the scientific community and our understanding of the universe?
