Philippines Leaves the USA – level 3

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced his separation from the USA during his visit in China. He aligned himself with China and Russia, saying that there are three of them against the world and that it is the only way.

The relationship between the Philippines and the USA deteriorated since Duterte’s election this year. The new relationship is a reversal in foreign policy for the country. Unlike the old ally, China has supported Duterte’s hard-line drug war.

Difficult words: announce (officially say something), deteriorate (fall apart), reversal (a change to an opposite direction), ally (a formal friend), hard-line (extreme).
