Pope Francis visits East Timor – level 1
11-09-2024 07:00
Pope Francis visits East Timor on September 9th.
This is the first time a Pope visits the country since it becomes free from Indonesia. People in the capital, Dili, are happy. But some people are angry. Workers build a new altar for the Pope. It costs about 1 million dollars. Many families have to leave their homes because of it. These people do not know where they will live next. The church says that they only built the altar. But the government tells people to move.
East Timor has a close history with the Catholic Church. In 1989, Pope John Paul II visits the country. At that time, it is still part of Indonesia.
Difficult words: Pope (the head of the Roman Catholic Church), altar (a special place for church ceremonies), history (things which happen in the past).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What was the reaction of the people in Dili to Pope Francis' visit and the construction of a new altar?
