Russia prisoner swap – level 3

08-08-2024 07:00

On Friday, Russia disclosed the names of some Russians involved in a multi-nation prisoner swap.

Vadim Krasikov, a hitman convicted of murder in Germany, and Artem and Anna Dultseva, along with their two children, were part of the exchange. The Dultseva family had been living undercover in Slovenia, pretending to be from Argentina for eight years. Even their children were unaware of their true identities and they spoke Spanish at home.

Sixteen people were moved from Russia to the West, including seven Russians who were critics of President Putin. Among the freed prisoners were Vladimir Kara-Murza, Andrei Pivovarov, and Ilya Yashin from Germany, who were thankful for their release but didn’t want to leave Russia. Three US citizens were also returned home, which was a success for officials who had negotiated for over a year.

Even though the swap happened, there is no sign of better relations between Russia and the West.

Difficult words: disclose (reveal), multi-nation (including several nations), hitman (a person who is paid to kill someone).
