Saving West Papua forests – level 2
26-06-2024 07:00
In Indonesia, people are trying to protect forests in West Papua with the ‘All Eyes on Papua’ campaign.
Indigenous tribes and palm oil companies are in a legal fight in the Supreme Court. People shared the campaign’s hashtag and poster nearly six million times. This campaign is like the ‘All Eyes on Rafah’ image. In May, videos of protests by indigenous people appeared on the internet.
Indonesia is the biggest producer of palm oil, which causes deforestation. In 2011, the government stopped giving new permits for palm oil in virgin forests. Activists want the government to protect the environment. Online support is important to help the indigenous tribes win in court.
Difficult words: campaign (organized activities to achieve something), indigenous tribe (a group of people who live in the same place for a very long time), deforestation (clearing a wide area of trees).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What is the significance of online support in the legal fight between indigenous tribes and palm oil companies in Indonesia?
