Some countries still use asbestos – level 3

18-03-2025 15:00

Asbestos is a natural mineral that was widely used in construction and industry because of its heat resistance and durability. However, scientists later discovered that asbestos fibers could cause serious lung diseases, such as asbestosis.

When asbestos materials are damaged, tiny fibers are released into the air. If inhaled, they can remain in the lungs for years, leading to severe health problems. Many countries have banned asbestos, but older buildings may still contain it. People working in construction, demolition, or renovation must be careful to avoid exposure. Wearing protective equipment and using special removal procedures help reduce the risk. Unfortunately, in some developing countries, asbestos is still used because it is cheap and effective. Experts warn that continued exposure will cause long-term health crises.

Governments and health organizations are working to raise awareness and remove asbestos safely. If people suspect asbestos in their homes, they should contact professionals rather than trying to remove it themselves.

Difficult words: durability (how long something lasts without breaking), exposure (being in contact with something harmful), awareness (knowledge of a situation or fact).
