The EU plans sanctions on Russian gas – level 3
13-05-2024 07:00
On Wednesday, the EU countries started negotiations on the next round of sanctions against Russia, which targets LNG, liquefied natural gas, for the first time.
The proposal aims to stop the practice of trans-shipment, where LNG received at EU ports is sent to other countries. Additionally, the sanctions target three Russian LNG projects not yet operational. However, the Russian government has been effectively finding ways around previous restrictions in the oil sector, which brings doubts about how effective the proposed measures will be.
Despite initial discussions, reaching a final agreement among the 27 member states may take weeks due to the sensitivity of energy sector sanctions.
Difficult words: liquefied (made liquid), trans-shipment (the process of transferring goods from one ship to another), operational (working or ready for use).
