The highest treasure in the UK – level 2

29-10-2024 07:00

In 2019, a group of metal detectorists found a hoard of 2,584 silver pennies from the time of the Norman Conquest.

The South West Heritage Trust bought the coins for 4.3 million pounds (5.5 million dollars), making it the most valuable treasure ever found in the UK. The men discovered the coins in Somerset, and they will share the money with the landowner. One of the finders said it felt like winning the lottery.

This hoard has many coins from King Harold II and William the Conqueror. The process to sell the treasure took almost six years, partly because of the pandemic. Now, the coins will return to Somerset. The finders hope to continue searching for more treasure in the future.

Difficult words: detectorist (a person who uses a metal detector to find objects underground), hoard (a large amount of something), valuable (costing a lot of money), treasure (a lot of something expensive such as money, jewels, stones, or metals).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

Who are depicted on many of the coins found in the hoard discovered by the group of metal detectorists in Somerset?
