Trading cards – level 3
03-04-2026 15:00
Trading cards, especially Pokémon, have transformed from childhood hobbies into serious financial investments.
In February 2026, a rare Charizard card sold for a record-breaking 16.5 million dollars. Between 2020 and 2025, spending on non-sports cards increased by 350%, which sometimes even beat the stock market’s returns.
Many kidults (adults who buy toys) are now using their disposable income to build collections as alternative assets or emergency funds. To determine a card’s value, owners use a process called grading. Professional companies examine the card’s condition; a pristine 10 grade can make a card worth thousands more than a lower grade.
However, experts warn that this market could be a bubble, similar to the Beanie Baby fad of the 1990s. If people lose interest or if cards are overproduced, prices could crash. Despite these risks, the market is currently booming, and many collectors enjoy owning physical pieces of their childhood nostalgia while hoping their value continues to grow.
Difficult words: disposable income (the extra money you have left to spend after you pay for important things like food and rent), pristine (in perfect condition), fad (something that is very popular for a very short time), nostalgia (a feeling of happiness and a little bit of sadness when you remember good times from your past).

What is the name of the process used to assess a card’s condition, and why can a pristine 10 grade significantly boost its market value?
