UK protests – level 2

07-08-2024 07:00

There were violent protests against immigrants across the UK. Police officers got hurt. They arrested many people.

Police tried to keep protesters and anti-racism groups apart. Officials said the violence was in many cities and towns and warned it might continue. The government said police would arrest the rioters and they would go to prison. The Home Secretary said the police have full support to stop the violence. This is a big problem for the government.

The trouble started after false stories online about a killing, which led to many protests. Many people said that social media spread false information and supported protests. Police are working to keep things calm and stop more violence.

Difficult words: anti-racism group (people who fight against racism), violence (hurting people and damaging things), rioter (a person who takes part in violent protests).

What did officials warn regarding the violence related to the protests?
