US tariffs impact people and businesses – level 2

13-03-2025 07:00

New tariffs on products from Canada, Mexico, and China are making prices in the US go up.

President Trump added a 25% tax on many imports from Canada and Mexico and doubled tariffs on Chinese goods to 20%. These changes affect businesses and shoppers.

Farmers use fertilizers from Canada and fruits like avocados and tomatoes from Mexico. With higher costs, restaurants and stores may ask customers for more money. Some companies can react to these changes, but small businesses may have problems.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses learned to use different suppliers. But these tariffs create new problems. If prices go up, people may spend less, which will hurt businesses and jobs. Trump says tariffs will help the country but may also cause problems.

Difficult words: add (to put something with something else to make something go up), fertilizer (a substance which makes plants grow better), supplier (a person or company which sells things).

What potential effects might increased costs for fertilizers and fruits have on restaurants, small businesses, and overall consumer spending?
