What dopamine does to our brain – level 3

26-03-2025 07:00

Our addiction to digital devices, despite knowing they are not always good for us, can be explained by the role of dopamine, a neurotransmitter in our brain.

Dopamine is responsible for pleasure, motivation, and reward. When we engage in activities like scrolling on social media, our brain releases dopamine, making us feel good and encouraging us to do it again. However, over time, our brain adapts and releases less dopamine. This can create a cycle where we need to constantly seek new, rewarding experiences, which leads to an imbalance of dopamine in our brains. This imbalance may affect our attention span, making it harder to focus on tasks.

Digital media overstimulate our brain, and as a result, we develop a tolerance, just like in addiction. The constant search for new dopamine hits can result in a feeling of stress and anxiety, leaving us less satisfied with everyday activities.

Difficult words: neurotransmitter (a chemical in the brain that transmits signals), imbalance (a lack of balance), overstimulate (to excite too much).
