What is ultra-processed food – level 1

17-05-2024 15:00

People are talking a lot about ultra-processed food (UPF). Experts say that UPF is bad for our health.

But what is UPF? UPF is food from factories. It has things which we usually do not have at home. There are many additives in UPF. Usually, UPF has a lot of salt, fat, and sugar. It is not good for our health. UPF is, for example, ready meals, noodles, and sliced bread. Some studies say that this food makes our health worse.

Dr. Chris Tulleken helps children in poor countries. He sees what UPF does to children’s health. Big companies have a big impact on our health. They only want to make a lot of money. They do not care about people’s health. Tulleken says that there must be stricter rules about UPF.

Difficult words: additive (a substance which a company adds to food), ready meal (a meal which you buy in a supermarket and you only heat it), poor (when someone has little money).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some examples of ultra-processed food (UPF) and why is it considered harmful to our health according to Dr. Chris Tulleken?
