The International Doner Federation in Istanbul wants the EU to recognize the Doner kebab as a traditional Turkish food. This idea worries doner kebab shops in Berlin and Germany.

The Federation wants to protect the original Turkish doner, including its ingredients. In Berlin, doner kebabs are different because they include things like red cabbage. If the Federation’s plan works, it may not be possible to call these kebabs a doner anymore. People in Berlin think the word ‘doner’ is the same as ‘pizza’. It has many different variants and there should not be a patent for it.

The issue is important in Germany because doner kebabs are very popular and part of the culture. The debate started in the 1950s when Turkish workers brought the dish to Berlin and changed it to fit local tastes.
