Worm festival – level 3
18-06-2024 15:00
Welcome to Britain’s strangest festival, the Worm Charming Championship.
Every year, teams gather on the Cornish coast to lure worms from the soil using various techniques. Some methods are scientific, while others are quite unconventional. Six-year-old Sunny and eight-year-old Luna, the defending champions, are determined to retain their title. Last year, they charmed 20 worms, but the competition is fierce this year. Participants use creative methods to create vibrations in the soil to attract worms. Luna and Sunny mimic birds and imitate rain. Others pretend to be seagulls or run around. Worm welfare is important, with strict rules ensuring their safety. Organizer Georgia Gendell emphasizes both the serious and silly aspects of the event, highlighting worms’ importance to soil and food systems.
As the competition ends, the Tennessee Worm Wranglers win with 32 worms. Despite not winning, Luna and Sunny maintain their sportsmanship and promise to return next year.
Difficult words: lure (to attract), unconventional (not usual or typical), fierce (violent or frightening).
