The Nobel Committee is going to decide this year’s winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, and Donald Trump may get a nomination. If Trump wins, he would be one of many controversial people who won the award.
In 1973, Henry Kissinger won the award for his North Vietnam peace talks, despite that critics said that he was part of America’s secret bombing raids in Cambodia and in Vietnam.
In 1991, Aung San Suu Kyi won the award as she fought to help Myanmar become democratic. Critics now denounce her as a leader for her inaction to stop ethnic cleansing happening there.
In 1994, Yasser Arafat won the award for trying to bring peace to Palestine and to Israel in the Oslo Accords. Many critics said that he was behind terrorism that killed Israeli civilians.
In 2009, Barack Obama won an award for trying to help the people of the world cooperate. Critics say that he did not help because of involvement in the Libyan war.
Difficult words: controversial (arguable, debatable), raid (a sudden attack), denounce (criticise), intervene (step in), civilian (a person who is not part of the military).
