Cannon Against Avalanches – level 2
06-11-2024 15:00
Mount Elbrus is Europe’s highest mountain, and it is in Russia’s Caucasus Mountains.
To prevent avalanches in the mountains, people use a 1950’s howitzer. In war, people used it against aircraft, and now, it is keeping a nearby village safe.
It fires bombs which start small, safe avalanches. The smaller avalanches do not allow too much snow to build up, so big, dangerous avalanches do not happen.
Difficult words: prevent (stop from happening), avalanche (a mass of snow falling down a mountainside), howitzer (a type of cannon which fires upwards).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What is the purpose of using a 1950's howitzer in the Caucasus Mountains and how does it prevent large, dangerous avalanches?
