On August 3, 2019, a gunman killed 22 people at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, and he told police that he targeted people that he believed were “Mexicans.” El Paso is a town where more than 80% of its people are Hispanic.
For this year’s Dia de los Muertos celebration, people dedicated special altars to the victims of that shooting. Traditionally, people dedicate altars for their loved ones who died. They include in the altars flowers, candles, and candy made out of sugar that looks like skulls.
A museum in Chicago also dedicated an altar to the victims in El Paso. The museum president said that the altar used crosses and balloons with the number 22.
Difficult words: target (to look for something), altar (a religious structure where you put objects to respect a religious figure or a person), dedicate (to create and to honor).
