Dia de los Muertos – level 2

29-10-2021 15:00

On November 2, Mexicans celebrate the Dia de los Muertos, which means ’The day of the dead’ in English. It is a tradition which honors people who died.

People make an altar, which is a special place that they decorate with photos and things which belonged to someone who died. They leave food and drinks for the person on the altar. Many people believe that a dead person or people visit them on this day. During the year, they keep a dead person alive as they talk about him or her, and they use the same things which this person used.

Dia de los Muertos is quite similar to many other festivals except it is less formal than Christian traditions. People in Mexico celebrate life, and on November 2, they also give each other gifts and candy.

Difficult words: tradition (an event or activity that many people do at some time of the year, and it is a part of their lives), honor (to give respect), altar (a place usually in a church where people put gifts for a god; altars can also be for people who died).
