UK sends people to Africa – level 3
17-06-2022 07:00
For decades, African migrants have been risking their lives in overcrowded inflatable boats in the hope for a better life in Britain. However, this situation is about to change.
Most migrants are young single men, and they arrive with the help of smugglers on boats or lorries. Many successfully apply for asylum; however, some never make it to the shore, and the government says that it needs to deter migrants from the dangerous and illegal routes into the country.
A controversial five-year trial is now underway, and the trial means that some asylum seekers will be sent to Rwanda for processing after they reach British soil. However, Rwanda is one of the world’s least developed countries with a poor human rights record.
The UK is one of other countries to process asylum seekers elsewhere. In 2001, Australia began using offshore detention centers in 2001, and in 2013, the country hardened its immigration law. Denmank introduced increasingly harsh immigration policies in the past 10 years. Last year, the country passed a law that allows refugees to be moved to asylum centers in its partner country.
Difficult words: deter (to discourage someone), process (a method to officially document people), detention center (a place where people stay for a period of time).
