A Russian court banned Novaya Gazeta from operating; it was one of the country’s few remaining independent news companies.

The newspaper has online publications elsewhere in Europe, which Russian authorities have also blocked. Reportedly, Novaya Gazeta failed to provide documents that related to a change of ownership in 2006.

People founded the newspaper almost 30 years ago, and it was one of Russia’s leading investigative news sources. Dmitri Muratov, the paper’s editor-in-chief, was a Nobel peace prize winner. He said the decision was a political hit job, and it had no legal basis at all. The newspaper will appeal the court’s decision; however, Muratov expects the same result.

In March, Novaya Gazeta already suspended operations in Russia because it allegedly violated strict censorship laws on coverage of the war in Ukraine.

Difficult words: hit job (a murder for criminal or political purposes), violate (to break a rule), censorship (when an authority limits the ideas that people are allowed to express in books, films, documents, and so on).
