Ancient human tooth – level 3

Near Dmanisi, Georgia, archaeologists unearthed a 1.8-million-year-old tooth which belongs to an early species of human. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, other archaeologists found human skulls dated to the same time near Dmanisi.
The discoveries are the oldest in the world outside Africa. The oldest Homo Sapien fossils date to around 2.8 million years ago, found in modern-day Ethiopia.
Experts say that the Dmanisi finds cement the region as the home of one of the earliest prehistoric human settlements in Europe, possibly anywhere outside Africa. The implications are enormous for Georgia and for the story of humans leaving Africa 1.8 million years ago. The research extends human occupation of the area, and it solidifies Georgia as an important place for paleoanthropology and the story of humans.
