Hurricane Fiona hits Puerto Rico – level 2

In 2017, Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, and it damaged the country’s electric system. It was the largest blackout in US history.
Since that time, the power grid wasn’t working well, so when Hurricane Fiona hit Puerto Rico on Sunday, all the country was without electricity. Winds of over 135 kmph and heavy rains caused landslides and floods. Unlike when Maria hit the country, people prepared for the hurricane because they bought power generators.
The US President declared a state of emergency in the country, and authorities immediately helped the worst affected areas. Experts warned that the hurricane would soon reach the Dominican Republic, and it could cause damage there, too.
Difficult words: blackout (when there suddenly is not electricity in a town or area), power generator (a device that makes electricity), declare a state of emergency (to officially say an emergency happened so that the government can help a place).
