No referendum for Scotland – level 2
01-12-2022 15:00
UK’s Supreme Court rejected Scotland’s attempt for a referendum on its independence.
The court said that if Scotland wanted a referendum, the UK government would have to agree. Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland’s First Minister and leader of the Scottish National Party, said that Scotland voted against Brexit, and Scottish people had the right to another referendum.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that he wouldn’t agree with another referendum. He said that he didn’t want to break the union of England, Scotland, and Wales that is three hundred years old. Sunak was happy about the court’s decision because his country is in crisis, and the referendum would worsen the situation.
Difficult words: reject (to say no), referendum (a vote in which all the people in a country or area vote to change someone), union (a group of things together).
