Located in the Old City of Jerusalem, The Western Wall is the most religious site in the world for the Jewish people who come to pray for the unity of the people of Israel.

Thousands of people of all faiths journey to the wall every year to visit and recite prayers. Traditionally, these prayers are either spoken or written down and placed in the cracks of the wall. The wall splits into two sections, one area for males and the other for females. Last week, a team of men equipped with long wooden sticks or only with their hands removed written prayers that visitors to the Western Wall in Jerusalem traditionally cram into its crevices.

The notes to God are then buried on Jerusalem’s Mount of Olives, in accordance with ritual. This happens every year on the eve of Passover, one of the Jewish religion’s most sacred and widely observed holidays. In Judaism, Passover commemorates the story of the Israelites’ departure from ancient Egypt that appears in the Hebrew Bible books of Exodus, Numbers, and other texts.

The men clear the notes in order to allow people room to place new notes. This year, there have been many more notes and there have been many visitors to the Western Wall in the past three months.
