Transgender athletes cannot compete – level 1
15-05-2023 07:00
Halba Diouf is a transgender woman. She is an athlete. She wants to run in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
But she cannot run. The World Athletics Council said that athletes like her cannot compete in women’s events. It is important to protect the female category. Before, female transgender athletes can compete if their natural testosterone levels are below 5 nanomoles per liter of blood. Testosterone can have an impact on results in sports. Now, the level is 2.5 nanomoles per liter of blood. Transgender women athletes must keep it for two years.
Diouf is very angry. She does not agree with the new rules. She says that she has the right to run because she is a woman now.
Difficult words: transgender (a woman who identifies as a man or a man who identifies as a woman), category (a group of people or things which are similar in some way) testosterone (a hormone in a woman’s body).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What other options does Halba Diouf have in order to compete in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris?
