Aspartame may be dangerous – level 2
05-07-2023 07:00
Aspartame is a common artificial sweetener which companies use instead of sugar. They use it in many products, for example, soft drinks or chewing gums.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is considering declaring aspartame a substance which causes cancer. The IARC works with evidence, but the safety rules for how much aspartame can people eat come from another organization. Past IARC rulings made people worry and they caused companies to change the recipes of some products.
The World Health Organization is also reviewing aspartame, which it previously considered safe if people kept daily limits. Producers worry that making both processes work will confuse people. If IARC says that aspartame can cause cancer, big debates will start.
Difficult words: declare (to say something formally), ruling (an official decision), daily limit (how much of something you can do or take in one day).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What are the potential dangers of aspartame and against which health risks has it been studied?
