Gabon coup – level 2

04-09-2023 07:00

In Gabon, soldiers took control of the country, and they put President Ali Bongo under house arrest.

This happened after Bongo won re-election and he was about to become the president for the first time. His family ruled the country for almost 56 years. After the election results, shootings happened in the streets. Soldiers appeared on TV and they announced their takeover. People celebrated in the streets. Bongo appeared in a video and he asked for help. On the other hand, the military officers said that the election was not right. This situation adds to Gabon’s history of election problems and political tensions.

Difficult words: house arrest (when a prisoner stays in his own house rather than in a prison), takeover (taking control of something), tension (a difficult situation).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the implications of the military takeover of Gabon for international politics?
