Will India change its name? – level 2
11-09-2023 15:00
Indian President Droupadi Murmu called herself the ‘President of Bharat’ at a G20 summit dinner.
This surprised people and made them wonder if the government wanted to change India’s name. India has two names: India and Bharat. The government likes Hindi and it is changing some old names to new ones. Both India and Bharat are very old names. Some people believe that the British gave India its name, but historians say these names are even older than that.
To change India’s name to only Bharat, there must be a change in the constitution. The parliament may discuss it during the next big meeting.
Difficult words: historian (an expert in history), constitution (basic laws or a country).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What could be the potential implications of changing India’s name to only Bharat?
