Los Angeles authorities voted to start the process of naming Marilyn Monroe’s house, where she died in 1962, as a historic and cultural landmark.

This decision makes it impossible to demolish the building. Some people say that the Spanish Colonial-style house in Brentwood has historical value. All 12 members of the city council voted yes which immediately canceled a demolition permit issued the day before. It is also not possible to make big changes to the house until experts decide about the landmark status.

Marilyn Monroe bought the house for 75,000 dollars in the early 1960s after her third marriage ended. It was her only owned residence. Monroe was a famous actress known for movies like ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ and ‘Some Like It Hot’.  She died in the house when she was 36 years old because she took too many sleeping drugs.

Difficult words: landmark (a building or place which many people know), demolition permit (a document which says that it is possible to demolish a building), status (the position or situation of something at a particular time).
