Antarctica’s ice is record low – level 2
02-10-2023 07:00
Antarctica’s sea ice reached its smallest amount ever this winter, a report says.
This is causing worries among scientists who believe that climate change is causing problems in the southern part of the world. This change could harm animals like penguins which depend on the sea ice for living and raising their babies. It could also make global warming worse because less ice reflects less sunlight into space.
The report said that the sea ice covered 16.96 million square kilometers at its largest point on September 10. This is the smallest number since scientists started using satellites in 1979. It’s even less than the old record from 1986, which had about 1 million square kilometers more ice.
Difficult words: amount (how much of something there is), global warming (warming of the Earth), reflect (to send back heat, light, or sound).
What are the potential impacts of this record-breaking reduction in Antarctica's sea ice on global climate change?
