A man with Parkinson’s walks again – level 3

A Swiss-designed implant has significantly improved the ability to walk for a long-term Parkinson’s patient Marc Gauthier who had been confined to his home.
The neuroprosthetic, implanted at Lausanne University Hospital, uses electrodes against the spinal cord, coupled with an electrical impulse generator under the skin to stimulate leg muscles. This innovative technology has brought newfound independence to Gauthier and improved his daily life, instilling confidence.
Parkinson’s is a degenerative neurological disease and it has seen a rise in cases over the past 25 years, affecting millions worldwide. Clinical tests are planned for six more patients next year, with the hope that this technology can benefit a wider group of advanced Parkinson’s patients.
